Book Review: Political Spirituality in an Age of Eco-Apocalypse

By James W. Perkinson

This is a tough work to describe, so I am going to cut right to the chase. The writing style is nothing like you would expect for a heady, philosophical, spirituality-focused work. He writes like a poet or a rapper. It flows smoothly and you find yourself lost in the rhythm and almost organically absorbing what he is saying. Each chapter can be read in order or independent of the overall work. Their connections lie in the content itself. Each chapter addresses the topic of the connections between indigenous spirituality and Christian ideas and how that needs to impact our relationship with each other and the earth.

Woven throughout are discussions on the Biblical notion of Jubilee, Voodoo, Filipino indigenous spirituality, and even Critical Race Theory. The latter likely being the most divisive of his notions. On that front, there is an underlying theme of the damage that white Christianity has done to the relationship between human groups and humanity and the earth itself.

He draws from these ideas to discuss Jazz as a full expression of humanity and hip-hop as modern prophecy. He even devotes ample time to the discussion of the DJ as a modern Shaman.

The challenge in describing this work is that it is endlessly rich. Even if you are not particularly spiritual yourself, you can find truth and deep meaning within. The call to overcome our own individual prejudices and learn from the oppressed other is truly universal (if you happen to find yourself as one of the privileged). Not to mention urgently necessary in a time of tense race relations and the potential for global war.

Political Spirituality in an Age of Eco-Apocalypse is not for the closed of heart. If you are not willing to have your worldviews confronted and your white supremacy challenged, you are going to come away from this work, assuming you do not throw it across the room before you are done, angry and resentful. It is a timely and important, work, though, and one which I highly recommend.
